Nail two to the hinge side and three to the latch side of the jamb. Also, have a friend, family member or neighbor help you hold the door in place while you install it. Some door openings may be too small or too large for the door. The very top of the door unit should be level. If everything looks good you can secure it in place by nailing the temporary blocks to the wall. During an exterior door installation, you want to check for an even gap between the door frame and the rough opening.

This gap allows the wood of the frame and door to expand and contract during the different seasons. The hot humid temperatures of Dallas summers cause the wood to swell. Use shims to hold the door jamb in place. Fill the gap with weather stripping as it will allow the wood to expand and contract while providing insulation. You can do this by placing shims under the jamb unit or threshold until the door hangs plumb.

Add shims behind the hinge areas as necessary. You can nail the temporary blocks to the wall to hold the door in place. Those installing an exterior door will need to check the threshold to ensure it seals properly. If not, make adjustments as necessary. Check the alignment by adding a few security screws or nails to the hinge side of the door jamb.

There are a couple of different ways to do this. Install a third security screw in the center hinge and make sure all three are tight. The second way is to screw two temporary 3-inch screws through the hinge-side of the door jamb.

Place one about 2 inches above the top hinge and the second 2 inches from the center hinge. When you let go or remove the temporary blocks, the door should remain plumb. Now you can securely attach the hinges to the jamb with screws.

Pre-hung doors should come with screws to attach the hinges to the jamb. Once everything is in place, you can cut the shims to fit flush with wall and jamb. Make sure the latches on the door and door jamb align. Place a shim behind the top half of the latch plate area.

This prevents the latch side of the jamb from sliding out of place if the door slams shut violently. Check the threshold of your exterior door to make sure it has a tight seal.

If everything looks good, you can start caulking around the exterior of the doorway. Most exterior doors need a line of paintable caulk around the edge of the door frame and exterior wall. This seals the door and prevents bugs, moisture, and air from entering your home. Fill any holes and cracks in the areas around your exterior door. Use weather stripping as extra insulation in areas where applicable. Almost any door can work in any climate.

There are, however, some that may degrade faster than others. Wood is a beautiful door material and works well in the northern climates. Fiberglass and steel doors tend to hold up better than wood in southern climates, like Dallas, Texas. Look for door styles that fit the look and feel of your home.

Some specialty doors, like pocket doors, glass doors, and French doors will have more door installation steps. Dry-fit the new door. This means that you place the door where it's going to be set to make sure that everything is going to fit properly. If you find any problems at this stage like the door doesn't fit, things aren't even then you'll need to deal with those first. Apply caulk. Apply two thick beads of caulk, along the front and rear edges of the subsill, where the sill will be placed.

Continue applying the caulk approximately 2 inches 5. Insert door into opening. Place the bottom of the door first, tilting the top out toward you, then slide the door into place.

It's best to work from the outside of the house when you're inserting the door into the opening. You may want to enlist a friend to help you lift and place the door depending on its weight. Place shims on the hinge side of the door, behind any points where hinges will be attached to the door frame.

The door will be secured to the rough opening in these areas later. Secure door temporarily. After you've made all of the necessary adjustments, secure the door temporarily, using 16d finishing nails. Lightly drive the nails through the hinge jamb, near where the hinges will be installed. Don't put the nails all the way in. Part 3. Test the swing of the door.

It should open and close smoothly. Sometimes pre-hung doors will have an adjustable sill, which can be useful it the door isn't quite adjusted perfectly. You want to make sure that the door doesn't scrap the floor inside your house.

If necessary, make adjustments by moving the jamb in or out, at the top or the bottom. Secure door-jambs. Drive 3 inch 7. Secure the remaining jambs all the way around the door, always driving the screws or nails whatever is suggested by the manufacturer through the shims. Verify occasionally that the door assembly is remaining properly adjusted.

Install the lock strike, putting the screws through the shim. Install insulation. Finish the job by installing loosely packed, fiberglass insulation around the edges of the door frame. Install interior trim, following the manufacturer's instructions. Apply paintable caulk along all of the joints and intersections of the trim and the brick-mold. On the inside of the house, add a couple of shims at the top of the door frame to hold the door in place and in plumb. Use the bubble level to verify plumb. Double up two shims from front to back to create a flat spacer. Place this spacer in the gap on the lock side of the door unit. After first making pilot holes, drive and countersink exterior screws at each of the three hinge locations through the door casing.

On the door lock side, add screws above and below the strike plate and at the top and bottom. Screw the strike plate into place. Remove the door's restraining shipment brackets and test the opening and closing of the door. Along the bottom, the door should fit the sill plate tightly but should have enough give that the door opens easily. If necessary, adjust the sill plate's adjustable cap up or down with a Phillips screwdriver.

Place a sheet of paper on top of the sill plate, then close the door. You should be able to pull the paper out without tearing it, but the paper should not move freely on its own. Remove the exposed sections of shims by scoring them with a utility knife and then snapping them off or by cutting them with the oscillating multi-tool.

Apply minimally expanding foam insulation in the gap between the door unit and the door frame. After the foam has expanded and dried, slice away any excess foam with a putty knife. Cut three pieces of interior trim on the electric miter saw. Place the three pieces on the house interior, securing the pieces with finish nails or with the cordless nailer.

Add the doorknob to the door. If the door is bored for a deadbolt, add this as well. On the house exterior, add caulk around the trim. If the door frame is unusually sized or requires significant repair work, call a door installation company or a contractor. Along with precision, speed is important.
